本片是导演扬•特洛尔1971年的名作《大移民》的续篇，两部电影均改编自Vilhelm Moberg的The Emigrants系列小说。本片取材此系列的后两部小说，The Settlers 和The Last Letter Home，讲述一批瑞典移民在19世纪中期的明尼苏达州建造家园的故事。大阪修道街药商的女儿春琴（山口百惠 饰）生的美丽动人，但小时候因为眼疾而失明，却在三弦琴上练就出一番造化，生性清高的她不愿被人瞧不起，性格也愈发古怪起来。照顾她日常起居的是比她大四岁的仆人佐助（三浦友和 饰），伴随着春琴的佐助对小姐的照顾可谓无微不至，追随春琴学习三弦的他和春琴的接触与日俱增，逐渐心生爱意。二人的微妙关系，春琴却不为承认，直到春琴因为意外被毁容。为了不让春琴感到难过，佐助选择了刺瞎自己的双眼，这样，留在他脑海里的便是小姐永远美貌的样子。二人自此再没有什么间隙，永远的生活在了一起…… 本片改编自谷崎润一郎的同名小说。。Disarmingly realistic in its depiction of the realities of frontier life, Heartland is a strong antidote to the cliches of traditional Westerns. This semi-documentary slice of life is based on the diaries of Elmore Randall Stewart about her days on the Wyoming frontier in the early 20th century. It's a strongly feminist statement about a woman raising her small daughter alone and scrapping for a living by working for a shy Scottish rancher. Director Richard Pearce brings an endearing touch to a film that is helped greatly by the dazzling cinematography of Fred Murphy. Conchata Ferrell and Rip Torn star in this small film that substitutes veracity for a high-powered plot. Pearce worked as a cinematographer on Woodstock and other documentaries before making his directorial debut. Winner of the 1980 Berlin Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival。
