1950年代，我国西南边陲。汉族老兵马长根（白穆 饰）和傣族新战士小岩（冯笑 饰）是好友，两人分一组巡逻。一次马长根违犯纪律，在巡逻中吸烟，被越境的特务尾随，幸而特务被狩猎的老爷爷（路茂 饰）开枪打死，但二人为此闹翻。一天晚上，吴队长（蓝谷 饰）带人巡逻发现空降特务，可粗心的马长根又让化装的特务杨国才（傅伯棠 饰）潜回寨子，因此受了处分，调到炊事班工作。在同志们帮助下，他认识到自已的错误。正待要求归队时得知，潜回的特务刺伤了老爷爷，马长恨恼恨不已。敌人准备在军民合建的钢桥上搞爆炸，郭参谋（冯奇 饰）和马长根在桥下发现了敌人置放的炸药，由此制订出将敌人一网打尽的计划......。Two Virginians are heading for a new life in Texas when they witness a stagecoach being held up.
